My husband and I aren’t huge TV watchers,
but occasionally there’s a show that catches our attention.
This spring that show is Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution.
For those who haven’t seen the show,
the long & the short of it is this: America needs a
wake-up call when it comes to our dinner plates.

In one of the first episodes of the show, Jamie visits a
1st grade classroom that includes a gaggle of kiddos who
(while able to recognize a french fry at twenty paces)
cannot identify a potato. Eeekkk and double EEEKKK!

This got me to thinking about my own boys
(granted- pretty much everything gets
me thinking about those two sweet boys),
and I decided to make our next grocery visit a pop quiz!
Can you identify this vegetable?

Can you identify this vegetable?
My boys did well at the veggie test.
We eat plenty of celery, cucumber, carrot, lettuce, yam, mushroom, broccoli, artichoke, peppers and the like to make
it pretty simple for the boys to identify these staples. However, I was horror stricken to find that neither of my brilliant children could identify cauliflower.
This is my fault of course!
Shame on me. I take full responsibility.
I’ve always thought of cauliflower as an awful mistake
of a food. I mean... smell, taste, texture…YUCK!
Pretty much everything is wrong with this vegetable. Right?
Wrong!
While at the store, I purchased an entire head of cauliflower so that my boys could learn this new vocabulary word and taste the horrors of my childhood. Of course, once home I realized that cauliflower is quite tasty. In fact, I really like it.
The trick is eating it raw. Who knew?
I believe the cauliflower of my youth was cooked too long and then doused with some sort of creamy cheese sauce that should be outlawed. Raw, however, this veggie is pure delight.
Here’s a gander at how I served that yummy veg to my boys.
What’s not to love about dip?

Our family dip recipe? I’m so glad you asked. Super Simple:
Small tub of cottage cheese
Dollop of sour cream
+ Sprinkle of dry onion-soup mix
More veggies please!
Jamie would be proud!
