We’re playing Golf at our house these days.
No, not the kind where you swing a club (I’m a mom of 2 boys who actually likes having working lamps in my living room!). This Golf is a favorite card game from my husband’s youth.
No, not the kind where you swing a club (I’m a mom of 2 boys who actually likes having working lamps in my living room!). This Golf is a favorite card game from my husband’s youth.
Here are the rules:
1) Each player is dealt four cards –laid face down on the table in front of them.
2) The remaining cards are set in a pile (face down) in the center of the table, with the first card being flipped over to create the discard pile.
3) Each player then takes one quick look at two of their cards and commits this information to memory. No more peeking after this!
4) Going around the table, players take turns choosing a single card (from the discard or draw pile) to ‘trade’ with one of their four face-down cards. The goal of the game is to get the lowest score possible. (King and Jokers are worth 0. Aces are worth 1. Queens and Jacks are worth 10.
5) The game continues like this until one player uses their ‘turn’ to knock. Once this knock on the table has occurred, everyone else (besides the knocker) gets one more turn to ‘trade’.
6) Players then flip over their cards and tally their scores.
You can play round-by-round (for young players with limited sit-time patience) or tally the points after 4 rounds (if your kiddos enjoy the drama and building excitement).
I was worried my five-year old wouldn’t understand this game, but quickly found him to be freakishly talented. I tend to forget which cards I looked at and end up trading a Joker for a Queen. Argh!!! He knocks quickly and with determination! Wowza!
I guess if college doesn’t work out there’s always Vegas, baby!
