I tend to gush about the Salem Public Library.
Gush, gush, gush....
I can’t help myself. Someday (in my spare time) I’d love to pen an entire book about the virtues of public libraries. It would start with the access it gives to so many and it would end with the phenomenal research that links increased library circulation to an increase in SAT scores.
I could go on and on!
Here’s just one fabulous fun feature at the local youth reference desk. Tucked to the side, this monthly drawing box just begs children to enter. Kids simply fill out a small entry slip each time they are at the library and wait to see if they are chosen as the lucky winner.

Both my boys have won in the past, but it’s not the free books I appreciate (although those are nice too). As a mommy/ educator, I am constantly trying to sneak in a little handwriting or spelling practice and this does it for me. My boys rush to the box, thrilled to neatly write in their name, school, age and phone number. I never have to say a word. I just stand nearby and smile.
