Recorder music...

2/25/2014

My third grade son and I have been learning to play the recorder this winter. I wanted him to learn a bit more about music, but without adding another appointment/lesson to our family schedule/budget and so turned to the activity that was part of my own elementary school days.

A quick trip to the Willamette Valley Music Company and we were up and running for under $10. We purchased a small plastic recorder and a beginning music book.

Just spending 20 minutes, two or three days a week, has been a nice opportunity to tackle this project together. Our boy picked up reading the music notes quickly and has shown quite a bit of curiosity in what is ahead. Here are two of the first songs he has mastered. Little by little, we are learning together.

I’ve blogged before about Freegal.
Yep.
That’s free music downloads from my favorite public library!

Here’s a video tutorial so that you can hear the music today:

_Here's the catchy tune that helps preschoolers
learn the days of the week.

That's my youngest boy singing -
when he first learned the song.

Here he is today:
_I know he'll lose his little boy voice soon -
I'm glad to capture it while I can.

Music to my ears...

Someday.... when the kids are grown; when work slows down; when I'm less tired; and when I have less laundry; I want to write a book about libraries. They say you should live what you love and I just love books and LIBRARIES! In fact (to flip that sentiment upside down) while some folks would like their ashes scattered at sea, I'd like to request the large-print mystery-stacks of which I am so fond.

Libraries really are 'the best thing since sliced bread' and in support of that statement I submit the following evidence:

Through your friendly local library you can now use your library card to log-on and download free digital music. Wait! I'll say it again: FREE music!

This new service is a godsend for our family. You see, just as my oldest is a complete book worm -- my youngest is a music maniac. Without the public library we'd go broke supplying my nine year-old with enough reading material or worse: he wouldn't be able to devour new titles every week. And sadly, in the past, I have not been able to supply enough music for my six year-old. Between the cost, the access, and my limited knowledge of who or what is even 'out there' -- we've been music deprived in this house. Well... that's true no longer.

With the help of Freegal and my beloved library card, I'm downloading a little jazz, a little country, a little this and a little that and watching my sweet-young-music-man tap his foot, nod his head, and soak in the rhythms.

"What's the fine print?" you ask. Well, each library card is limited to three downloads each week; only songs from Sony are available; there is an ongoing debate about the program; and I'm pretty sure our City Library Administrator is never going to agree to my ashes scattered among the titles.

That said... it's still music to my ears.

Piano Man...

We have a piano; a huge, loud, old, wonderful piano.

I wasn’t sure I wanted it at first, but now can’t imagine a childhood for my boys without it. We haven’t formally started lesson as of yet. So far…. I’m teaching myself and then passing it on. Needless to say, our progress isn’t breakneck-speed.

I don’t have much (that is helpful) to report about this musical adventure, but I couldn’t resist posting this picture. Those dangling toes just make my heart melt.

Can anyone recommend a piano book? video? teacher?

This boy has the personality of a rock star -
he just needs the music knowledge to match.
