The research is clear... students with greater access to reading material, read more AND students who read more, demonstrate higher reading achievement. In mommy-speak that means surrounding your kiddo with print helps them get ahead! Our house is a book haven- we have books almost everywhere!!! My kids can't go through the day (or even a single hour) without running into a book. The frequency with which they stop and pick up that book is pretty good as well. What's the trick? There are several. Here's one for today:

While this is the fast and easy way to store books, it visually generates very little interest. We have several book cases like this in the boys room (at floor level), but I never count on these to stop the boys in their tracks.
Instead this is the shelf we visit at bedtime to pick out the last story of the day. I also rotate books from this collection to our other book 'displays' around the house.

Think about your most recent trip to a bookstore. The displays are atop tables and shelves - grabbing you attention and tempting you to unburden your wallet. Moms and Dads can "market" books to their children just the same. I use a couple of small baskets to do this. My youngest son raids this basket daily.

Here's our book bucket in the bathroom. Don't think us uncultured -- we have books in every room of the house AND the car! You never know when a kiddo might be moved to pick up a book.
I want to be ready!!!
