Mix 3 cups of cornstarch,
1.5 cups of cold water,
and then 6 cups of play sand.
A trip to the Discovery Room, at our local library this summer, introduced my family to the wonders of 'Moon Sand'. Great for indoor sandcastles, Moon Sand holds its shape when pressure is applied but then easily reverts to grains when the building fun is complete. It feels a lot like packed brown sugar (without the sticky sweetness). A quick search of the web uncovered all the fabulous mommies out there who have figured out how to make this product at home! A big thank you to Pennypinchingparent.com Moon Sand Recipe:
Mix 3 cups of cornstarch, 1.5 cups of cold water, and then 6 cups of play sand.

Homemade pie crust is one of life's true pleasures. Not only does it taste better than store bought - but the extra provides great kitchen fun for young-ones. Today I whipped up a Yummy Pear Pie while my four year-old rolled and cut and 'sprinkled' his very own cinnamon & sugar pie-crust cookies. Does life get any better? Here's the Fool-Proof Pie Crust recipe I use:
1 1/3 cup flour 1/2 tsp salt 1/3 c and 1 TBsp veg oil 1/4 cup cold milk (Makes one 9" crust) Here's my family Yummy Pear Pie recipe: Slice and peel 6 -8 pears. Place in pears saucepan and cover with water – cook until soft. Drain pears and add 2 TBsp corn starch, 8 oz. sour cream, and ½ cup sugar. Mix and pour into raw pie shell. Cover with another pie crust and then bake at 350’ until golden. (Makes one pie) Here's my brother in-law's Quiche recipe: Bake your pie shell at 450; for 8 minutes, then fill with: 3 eggs beaten 1 t. flour ¼ t. salt 1 ½ c. half and half Onion, ham, bacon, veggies, cheese or whatever strikes your fancy. Then bake at 325’ for 40 more minutes. (Makes two 9” pies. You can also freeze the whole thing (uncooked) and then bake from frozen for 60 minutes.) Here's our favorite Cooked Play Dough recipe:
Combine all the ingredients listed before in a medium sauce pan and cook over medium heat. Stir constantly until the dough forms a ball. Knead and store in airtight container. 1 c. flour 1 Tablespoon oil ½ cup salt 2 teaspoons cream of tartar Food coloring Hats off to my amazingly creative friend Jessica! A recent play date at her house provided much needed Mommy to Mommy conversation, as well a chance to make Gak! This slippery, slimy, play-dough-like fun is easy to make, cleans up quickly, and is a sure giggle-starter with the five-and-under crowd. My boys had a snow cone sale in our front yard earlier this week. This activity turned out to be really easy, great fun, and a fabulous opportunity for my oldest son to practice his math skills. A special shout out to all our kind neighbors who came to support my two handsome, young entrepreneurs! Here are some quick tips for snow cone sales on your block: 1) Don’t fill your freezer with ice trays! Instead… (an hour before your sale begins) just grab a bag of ice at your local convenience store. 2) Use what you have! We don’t own an ice shaver, but when in doubt I always turn to my countertop Kitchen Aid mixer. It mixes, it whips, it dices and, when using the attachment for slicing, makes perfect shaved ice! Fill a small container with these shavings and place in a small ‘stand-side’ cooler. Our snow kept its shape for up to 45 minutes. 3) Hit your local restaurant supply store! Snow cones somehow taste even better when in the small paper cones and topped with a brightly covered straw. Flavored syrups (in all the variations) are available - just like your favorite coffee stand. I’ve seen variations at Target, but (in the NW) you can buy the real deal for a fraction of the cost at Cash&Carry. 4) Spread the word! The kiddos can make fun signs but nothing draws a crowd like an email sent to your neighbors and friends telling them when you’ll be open for business. I loved these treats when I was a kid. (Even though we had the homemade kind rather than those sold by Bill Cosby.) Jellosicles Mix: 1 pkg flavored Jello 1 c. hot water. Add 1.5 cup cold water. Stir and pour into holders. Freeze. Makes 12. Pudding Pops Mix: 1 small pkg instant chocolate pudding 3 c. cold milk. Stir and pour into holders. Freeze. Makes 12. |
