It's nearing the end of winter break and although the hustle and bustle of the holiday season has mostly passed, it's time for one of my boys' favorite holiday traditions: Gingerbread Houses.
This is such a great craft project for kids. My boys spent over an hour adding every perfect, sweet detail to the project. By the end, my 7 year-old had frosting in his hair and my 4 year- old had bright red lips from licking all the red sprinkles that 'somehow' ended up on his fingers.
Here's the two rules of Obery Gingerbread Houses:
1) Stay flexible - In the past we have baked our own gingerbread but using graham crackers is my ultimate non-fussy favorite. This year we received a fabulous pre-made kit as a gift. I saw similar kits at Safeway the day after Christmas for 50% off.
2) Use your 'saved' candy - One week after Halloween and I'm done playing candy-police. So... our family takes all the remaining candy and 'saves' it for this very event. Ripping off the wrappers, we then use this candy to uber-decorate our house. It gets used (but not eaten), making both Mom and children happy.
